Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
