Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas pose an grave threat to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true danger confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
